Ultrasonic Testing (UT)

Ultrasonic testing (UT) is one type of nondestructive testing that uses acoustic energy in the ultrasonic spectrum (i.e., sound waves) for evaluating materials. International Inspection primarily performs UT with

  • Straight beam (compression wave) for
    • Thickness measurements,
    • detection of plate laminations,
    • bond testing,
    • finding opposing members,
    • etc.
  • Angle beam (shear wave) for
    • finding subsurface defects in tests, such as weld inspection, crack detection and a variety of other uses.

The following includes a brief description of a few of the UT methods and solutions we provide.

A-Scan Thickness Measurements

Thickness measurements using the pulse-echo technique permits accurate assessment of metal thickness through coatings. This eliminates the cost of cleaning and re-coating locations requiring measurement. Measurements can be obtained on materials in excess of 1000 degrees.

B-Scan Inspection

The advantage of B-Scan lies in the presentation of a section view of the material being inspected. B-Scan presents a profile view showing locations, shape and depth of discontinuities. It is especially effective for evaluating specific areas where unusual pitting and corrosion may be present. B-Scan can be used to monitor specific areas of interest over time for evaluation of varying failure mechanism.

Weld Inspection

Ultrasonic inspection of weld and the heat-affected zone is a proven and effective method for locating cracks, inclusions, lack of fusion and lack of complete penetration. It's advantages include a rapid assessment of defect length, depth and location. The defects are readily compared with a known reference for acceptance or rejection to a specific Code. The key to accurate ultrasonic weld inspection is well trained, certified and experienced technicians.
